Some of our members will be aware that Chris Parsons and Cod have invested in a Villa in Spain, in the heart of the Costa Del Sol where you can enjoy all manner of golf and other attractions.  For full details of the location and facilities send for a copy of their brochure. Simon advises that discounts are available for WGS Members.

How we started

The Woodrush Golf Society was formed in 1986  when the Rugby Club Chairman, Jim Johnston, suggested that with the amount of keen golfers in the club an out of season golf event should be held.  A venue was organised by Jim at a venue that he was familiar with through business, the Telford Hotel Golf & Country Club.  Micky Leech helped out by keen golfers Dave (Radar) Parker and Steve (Wolfie) Smith, ably abetted by  the likes of Simon (Cod) Peace picked up the reins and the inaugural event was duly held attended by some 36 players, ex players and rugby club officials, members and friends.  For the record a 16 year-old Gary Meads was the first winner of what has become an annual event now known as the Woodrush Open.  Closer study of the picture taken at the event by one Glyn Williams (brother of Rhys) reveals a number of well known ex players and club members :-

Greg Rayson                                        Mark Newey                Ian (Fingers) Smith

Ken (Bunker) Hussey                           Micky Leech                Bob Gibbs

Mark (Clumsy) Warmington                 Mark Meads

Broc Badger                                         Malcolm Coall

Mike Betts                                           Gray Rohloff

Paul Cox                                              Jon James

Joe Miah                                              Gary Meads

The quality of the golf at the first event was mixed to say the least and one of the most memorable incidents has to be Jim Johnston himself having a number of air shots on the first tee, in front of the waiting golf club members, before shanking his ball into a bush - suffice to say Jim was the winner of the ‘Sash’ for the golfer who most needs to improve - now an institution - the society presents a tin of biscuits to the player most in need of improvement at each event.

As mentioned previously, the Woodrush Open became an annual weekend event, held for 18 years at Telford Hotel G&CC until 2004 when it moved to a new venue at Staverton Park near Daventry.  In addition to the summer weekend two other event are held one in the Spring and the other in the Autumn.  The Spring event is a pairs competition for the Smith-Kennedy Trophy kindly donated by Dave Smith and John Kennedy.  The autumn event is the President’s Cup.  The President of the society is none other than Simon Peace who elected himself to this lofty position thereby acquiring the well know nickname within the society of “Self Elected”.

Over the years the society has played many of the Midlands finest courses including Enville, Beaudesert, Blackwell, Copt Heath, Little Aston, Edgbaston, Moseley, Stratford, Droitwich, Robin Hod, Olton, Ross-on-Wye, Fulford Heath, Kings Norton and Swindon.

A record of the winners of all of the Society’s events is kept on a competition board situated in the lounge of the Rugby Club.

The society is open to anyone associated with the Rugby Club and we are always keen to welcome new members.  We distribute details of events etc. via e-mail and post and anyone wanting to find out more or join us at our upcoming events in 2005 should contact Dave Parker on 07717 488505 or via dgparker@tinyworld.co.uk
